Philosophy

Capital Is a System,
Not a Collection of Investments

A sophisticated client does not merely own investments. They own a structure of assets, institutions, currencies, jurisdictions and obligations that has to work as a whole. Our philosophy is built on that observation.

The Capital System

One Structure,
Many Moving Parts

The capital of a family, an entrepreneur or an institution is rarely a single portfolio. It is made up of assets and liabilities, cash flows, currencies, banks and custodians, managers and funds, companies, legal structures, family interests, jurisdictions and liquidity requirements.

Each part is usually managed by a different specialist. Few people look at the whole. Batavian Capital exists to do so: to understand the system, to analyse it, to structure it, to allocate within it, to connect its parts, to monitor it and to report on it.

  2. AnalyseExamine exposures, concentrations, correlations, liquidity and counterparties across the whole structure.
  3. StructureOrganise the system with purpose, within the law and with clear ownership.
  4. AllocateDirect capital to strategies and managers that fit the objective and the risks.
  5. ConnectCoordinate banks, custodians, managers and advisers so that they work as one structure.
  6. MonitorFollow portfolios, managers and exposures on an ongoing basis.

Six Principles

What We Believe,
and How It Shapes Our Work

01

Preservation Before Optimisation

Capital that is lost cannot compound. We establish first what must not be put at risk, and only then look for improvement within those limits.

02

Diversification Beyond Asset Classes

Diversification is not the number of positions; it is the diversity of return drivers, and of banks, custodians, managers, currencies and jurisdictions.

03

Access With Discipline

Access to specialist managers, institutions and markets is a means, not an end. Every access point is examined through due diligence, and suitability decides.

04

Structure With Purpose

A structure should serve a defined objective, such as continuity, clarity of ownership or protection, and never exist for its own sake.

05

Independent Perspective

No institutional parent, no external shareholders and no conflicting mandates. Recommendations are made on their merits, free of product bias.

06

Long-Term Alignment

We build lasting capital partnerships founded on trust, rigour and alignment, and measure our work over years rather than quarters.

A Counter-Balance

Sometimes the best capital architecture is simple.

Complexity is introduced only where it serves a clear objective. Not every client needs several banks, multiple jurisdictions, trusts or a long list of funds. The first task is to establish what is actually required and, often, what can be removed.

PurposeDoes it serve a defined objective?
VisibilityCan its risks be understood, measured and monitored?
IntegrityIs it compliant, transparent and properly documented?
Clear Boundaries

What We Do,
and What Others Do

Good coordination depends on knowing where one role ends and another begins. We keep the two lists apart.
